Celebrate and Nominate a Woman of Distinction Today

It was a great honour to receive the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award at an event earlier this year. That evening, I just thought I was the luckiest woman alive!

Women mostly do not stop to recognize our achievements; and we certainly do not applaud ourselves much. Being honoured with this Award, together with six other women doing extraordinary work, was so inspirational, moving and – above all – energizing.  I am more determined than ever to reach for the moon and the stars.

Receiving this Award has helped me to refocus on the path ahead. It has galvanized me to try harder, to do more, and to reach for younger women’s hands and help them to the table.

Three young women came out of this experience for mentoring – it is such a privilege to pass on to them some of my experiences, and to make suggestions that they did not consider possible or available. These young women are budding future leaders and the Women of Distinction Awards has helped them along this path.

As YWCA Toronto’s single largest fundraising event, the Women of Distinction Awards also help raise crucial funds for the Association’s 30 programs across the city that support marginalized women and girls. We are all creating change together.

I am forever grateful to my nominators and to YWCA Toronto for this recognition. Being named a Woman of Distinction has reminded me why I pursue the work that I do. It has re-cultivated a sense of accomplishment and reminded me to persevere, to be dedicated and tenacious.

Nominations for the 2016 YWCA Toronto Women of Distinction Awards are due on Friday, November 6, 2015. This is your chance to recognize a remarkable woman that you know. Full details and the nomination form can be found here.

Fiona Crean is the Ombudsman for the City of Toronto and a YWCA Woman of Distinction Award recipient (2015).
