Donate & Learn Workshop in support of YWCA Toronto

I first learned about the Green Lotus, Donate & Learn Workshop at YWCA Toronto’s Elm Centre through LinkedIn and thought, “Brilliant! Why hasn’t anyone done this before?”

The opportunity to combine professional development with a worthwhile cause was something I couldn’t miss – and many of the people I met during the networking session felt the same way.  It was great to know that the workshop’s ticket price turned into 100% donations to YWCA Toronto’s Adopt-a-Family program. With our donations, even more families received the Adopt-a-Family gift cards to use during the holiday season.

The event was held at the beautifully restored heritage building of the YWCA Elm Centre, conveniently located near Bay and Dundas. It was the perfect venue with ample space to mingle and swap business cards before the workshop began.

The speaking panel included experts who readily shared their knowledge of social media and online marketing. Here are the five top tips I learned:

  • get comfortable with the tools, networks and etiquette
  • select the right social media channels
  • publish awesome content and lots of it
  • make it easy for visitors to share my content
  • and to dive right in – there’s no substitute for hands-on experience!

I look forward to attending the second Donate and Learn Workshop, coming up Tuesday May 28th. This time, my donation will support another great program at YWCA Toronto, the Girls’ Centre’s Miss Media Mentorship program. Through the Miss Media program, young girls learn about self esteem and how to advocate for better representation of girls in the media by using videotape and online campaigns.

It’s exciting to not only help young girls learn how to become exactly who they want to be, but to learn more about social media and search engine data mining.

Good for Green Lotus, the company organizing the event for figuring out how to not only bring new technology to my arsenal of professional skills, but also make it easy for me to support YWCA Toronto.
