This #GivingTuesday Help Empower Girls
Growing up as a girl in today’s world can be a struggle. From bullying, harassment, and inequality to balancing family life with the expectations of school, girls and young women face many challenges. Discovering who you are and who you want to become can be a tough process and too many girls confront these struggles alone without a safe space to learn and grow.
At YWCA Toronto Girls’ Centre, we make life better for girls and young women. Every day, we help girls take on the personal challenges they face, working to help them prepare for success. We organize events and workshops, hold group and one-on-one guidance sessions, and create an environment where girls can connect, grow, and take charge. “The Girls’ Center is a great place to learn and do things that you love, meet great people, find people who have the same thoughts and experiences,” said a participant, “and everything is confidential. YWCA Toronto looks out for you and treats you with respect.”
“The Girls’ Centre helped me and many other girls accomplish things we never thought we could accomplish. Without the Girls’ Centre, I would not be the person I am today.” -Lana, past Girls’ Centre participant
We know that the support and guidance girls receive during their teenage years can set the course for success in the years to come. “YWCA Toronto doesn’t only offer programs and opportunity for young women and girls, they build relationships with us and help us become the best version of ourselves,” said Lana, a past Girls’ Centre member, “the Girls’ Centre helped me and many other girls accomplish things we never thought we could accomplish. Without the Girls’ Centre, I would not be the person I am today.”
“If you have ever dreamt of a place where you could just be yourself, without criticism, then this is the place to be,” said another 11-year-old. “Don’t keep YWCA Toronto a secret. Pass it on!”
Girls-only spaces are important because they provide a safe space for girls to voice their concerns and challenge the status quo. These opportunities transform lives and help girls build the confidence to make their voices heard. “The Girls’ Centre is such an important part of my life,” said Joselyn, a former participant and mentor, “when I am there, it feels like home. At school, it can be hard to talk about the things I am going through or issues that matter. Not at the Girls’ Centre. The Girls’ Centre is a place where I can really be myself. I can try new things and make new friends without feeling judged.”
Even our youngest participants feel safe and supported by the Girls’ Centre. “I like YWCA Toronto’s Girls Centre because they stand up for girls and they also think girls are strong,” said one 10-year-old. “If you have ever dreamt of a place where you could just be yourself, without criticism, then this is the place to be,” said another 11-year-old. “Don’t keep YWCA Toronto a secret. Pass it on!”
