When the Community Gives

The women in the YWCA Toronto Philanthropy department get excited when people from the community host events on our behalf and donate the proceeds to YWCA Toronto.  Events like these (we call them Third Party Events) are important not only for raising much needed funds but also community awareness and outreach.

These events run the gambit from school bake sales to our biggest community event, the Bang & Olufsen Yorkville Run. Donors have done things like hosted dinner parties and asked guests to bring a donation in lieu of a hostess gift, organized car washes, held garage sales, concerts and golf tournaments; all in an effort to show their support of the work we do.

On December 4th, a community event to support YWCA Toronto will be held at the YWCA Elm Centre. Green Lotus’ Donate & Learn – Social Media Workshop invites people to attend, learn about social media and donate the ticket price to YWCA Toronto’s Adopt a Family program. Just in time for the holidays!

Says Bassem Ghali, Founder and VP Client Strategy at Green Lotus, “I wanted to find a way to support local, non-profit organizations and charities this holiday season. I thought that if I used my online marketing skills, as well as my professional and social networks, perhaps I could generate a larger effect. I shared the idea of doing an education workshop, with all proceeds donated to charity, and got nothing but encouragement, support, helpful ideas, and volunteers.”

At the Donate & Learn event, attendees will have the opportunity to learn from some of Canada’s leading social media marketing experts and best brands; Canadian Tire, Wind Mobile, Xplornet and Green Lotus.

“Originally I thought if 40 or 50 people showed up that would be a great success, but now we have over 120 people registered and limited spots left. The Donate and Learn Workshop is the result of the collaborative work of a multitude of individuals. I look forward to the event at the YWCA, and hope that we can make a difference in the lives of women and children through the Adopt-a-Family program.”

“What Bassem has managed to put together in such a short amount of time is remarkable” says Shana Hillman, YWCA Toronto’s Manager of Events, Stewardship and Volunteers. “Not only is it a great fundraiser, but it also connects us to a new sector (technology) that we’ve previously not reached out to.”
